The DVD for every Fly Fisherman

I’m not a gambler but there is one wager I’d be willing to make. I’d bet most anglers ( fly anglers anyway) in Kamloops have heard of Brian Chan.
Of course, there are reasons he’s as well known to anglers as Doc Spratley or Tom Thumb.
For starters, he knows what he’s talking about. Chan, a fisheries biologist, has worked for the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection for almost 30 years and has helped develop the area’s favorite fishing lakes.
Next he’s always been willing to share what he knows with others.
Chan is the author of several popular books on fly fishing. He’s also written countless magazine articles and has produced a number of instructional videos.
All have helped advance the sport of fly fishing by helping everyone from beginners to experts figure put the mysteries of the sport. His latest project, is a DVD called Expert Techniques for Stillwater Fly Fishing, will take the sport even further.
What makes this product particularly useful is the fact Chan shows not only how to tie 11 proven Stillwater fishing flies, but also how to fish them.
The on-the-water segments corresponding to each of the flies in the tying section of the DVD are fascinating and provide glimpses of the success anglers who really know what they are doing regularly find.
Take the section on the Lady McConnell, for example. For years I’ve wondered how to properly tie and fish the dry fly, designed to imitate an adult chironomid sitting on the waters surface.
The Lady McConnells I’ve tied never seemed quite right and I’ve never been able to fish them in a way that caught trout. Armed with what I saw in Chan’s DVD, however, I’m convinced I’ll be several steps closer to success with the fly the next time.
So it is with the whole DVD. Chan ties flies then shows how they work on the water. And the fish show how well the flies and techniques work as he catches a bunch.
The DVD format provides tremendous flexibility as viewers can skip directly to flies of interest without having to rewind or fast forward a VHS tape.
The production values are high, the fly tying segments are clearly lighted and easy to follow. The sound is excellent and the video smooth.
As well there is plenty of text to back up the segments. The material lists for the flies are complete, as are the descriptions of equipment, lines and leader lengths used during the fishing segments.
I even liked the chirping birds that accompany the menu screens. The DVD is a quality product start to finish.
My only complaint is that Chan limited the project to 11 flies. I would have preferred two or three times that ( and I would have been willing to pay accordingly). Perhaps he’s setting us up for the sequels.
"I've been a Fly Fisherman for over 40 years...a fisheries Biologist in charge of still water sports fisheries for 28, and it seems that everytime I go out on the water, I still learn something new."
