At last: A FLY-TYING INSTRUCTION series that servers as a reference for tying some of the most tried and true patterns ever created. And like other CD-ROMs before it, Expert Techniques for Creative Fly-Tying proves that CD technology is a great teaching tool for fly tiers. However this 6 CD set goes much further.
What makes CD-ROM technology so good for teaching fly tying is that it allows you to reference any tying step of any pattern with a few simple clicks of a mouse; that is if the producer job of laying the thing out. For example, let's say you forgot how to post the calf tail on a Parachute Adams. With a CD, you can find the step, review it, and get right back to the vise. The whole process is relatively quick compared to reviewing a videocassette.
Instructed by well-known British Columbia fly-tier and guide Brad Duplin, this series covers 53 patterns that were obviously chosen to cover a great breadth of fly-tying techniques--ones that can be used on patterns far beyond this list. The disk has tying video sequences for the Cahill, Elk-hair Caddis, Feather Duster, CDC Spinner, blue Dun Quill Wing, Kaufman's Stonefly, Rabbit Leech, Woolly Bugger, Baggy Shrimp, Stripped Peacock Chironomid, Beadhead Bloodworm, Black Ant, Pencil Popper, Crazy Charlie, Butler Dragon, and Glo-Bug. The list goes on, but that gives you an idea of the pattern diversity and the styles they represent.
Each video sequence is preceded by a recipe. It's a well-organized program and the video and instruction is clear. Duplin is aware of the camera, and makes sure you can see every little thing he is doing to a fly. The only thing missing are some fishing notes on each fly. This CD-ROM is for tying flies. It has no beginner instruction or lessons on entomology.

Fly Tying expert Brad Duplin explained each step of the fly's construction in simple and easily understood language, showing in detail how he was positioning the material and securing it with wraps of thread. Wanting to insure that I got it right, I stopped him in mid wrap, then made him go back to the beginning. All it took was a click of my mouse, then dragging a button across the bottom of my computer screen. That's the beauty of this CD-ROM six pack -- you can go back as often as necessary.
"You guys did a great job. I've been tying for 50 years and I learned all sorts of new tricks and techniques. I am truly very impressed."
There are 53 patterns from the relatively easy Woolly Bugger and Tom Thumb to intricate flies like the Brown Heron Spey and the General Practitioner. Duplin's instructions teach you how to spin deer hair and trim it to shape; select and tie in the hackles; position and tie down wings of feather or hair so they are locked securely in place; and taper the the bodies of chironomids. Virtually all of the steps required to create productive patterns are here.
This series is the best teaching tool I have encountered in fifty some years of tying flies - just like peering over this expert tier's shoulder.

With five hours of footage, covering 53 flies, this is the most comprehensive instructional tying video series to date. The series documents the fly tying technique and expertise of featured guide, Brad Duplin.
"I chose a variety of tried and true patterns, to cover most regions and styles of fly fishing," says Brad, " so you can tie the examples I've provided or create your own flies using the steps and techniques taught in this series."

"Wow! I started tying my own flies in the 1960s from books written in the 1930's. This extraordinary new series is the Star Wars of fly-tying videos. Every turn of the vise is a thrill --- and will teach you something useful. I feel deprived."
